The Picton United Church Food Bank began in 1984 and continues to be run entirely by volunteers. We provide short term assistance by acquiring and sharing food. As well, we provide information to help people find other needed services and help.
We have a Healthy Food Policy, and try to supply healthy and nutritious foods in all the food groups. Food stocks are replenished by monetary donations; community food drives held by schools, clubs, churches and businesses; supplies from local producers and farmers; as well as individual grocery and produce contributions.
Community residents in need of food can register and may take home an emergency 3-5 day supply of pantry staples, milk, eggs and baked goods. We also give a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and meat. As well as food, we distribute basic personal items and household cleaning products, and there is also an excellent selection of books from County Kids Read. We receive and distribute prepared, home cooked meals from Food to Share.
Prince Edward County’s most recent Vital Signs information tells us there are about 2,000 people in the county who are food insecure. Which means there are a lot of people here who do not have access to an adequate amount of affordable and nutritious food. For many reasons, there are those in need who do not register at the Food Bank – one reason is transportation.
Cash donations buy much needed fresh fruit and vegetables, milk, eggs and meat, and allow us to buy canned and dry goods in bulk at good prices. Without the cash donations, there would seldom be enough food in the Food Bank. Monetary donations can be made by cheque or cash – we don’t have the ability to do electronic transactions.
